Seatbelt question

So, I know you're not supposed to wash or soak carseat harness straps because it can weaken the webbing. Does the same hold true for seatbelts in vehicles? Like, if you spilled a drink on a seatbelt and it saturated the webbing, does that make the seatbelt less safe? Also, what about converibles or Jeep Wranglers? If you have a convertible and your car gets soaked because you left the top down in a rainstorm, can that affect the seatbelts? And with the Jeep, the same scenario could apply, plus if you go off-roading and you go through a stream or river, sometimes it can saturate the inside of the Jeep. Sorry for rambling, DH and I was discussing this yesterday...

I think that it may weaken them a bit (Funny how carseat mfrs want us to get they idea they are completely water soluble and must constantly be replaced...)...but then they dry and gain back most of their strength (www.carseat.org under 'technical' has an entry, I believe), and then they are really almost over-strong to give a huge margin of safety. I wonder if there are any statistics that show convertible seatbelts deteriorate or fail at a much higher rate than normal cars....hmmmm....
