Another Airline & Carseat Question

I will quote something that someone said another forum, is this true?
"Also as far as having it(Carseat) tossed around, gate checking stops most of that since it is hand carried down to the loading belt. Yes there is some jumbling in the bottom of the plane but because it doesn't go into the never-never land of the baggage world it doesn't get dropped, bumped and tossed about etc.."

She also said this about carrying a carseat, it doesn't seem right to me?:
"I do know that for bigger carseats, a great option is to extend the straps as far out as you can and wear it like a back pack. One less thing to carry! And although I haven't actually had to do that, I have seen it being done"

What is it you aren't suppose to with carseat when it comes to it's straps? I thought you weren't suppose to carry or handle them by certain straps?

Well, my dh was a bag guy for Continental about 15 years ago, and honestly, they aren't careful with ANYTHING, car seat or animals or coffins w/people in them.

Gate checking keeps them from riding the conveyor belts around, and a few less physical moves from you to belt to security to the belt to cart to plane, etc. but they still get tossed, not carefully placed in a box and secured. If there is turbulence it's likely that they will bounce in the belly of the plane too.

And yes, never carry a car seat by it's straps. they aren't designed for that, or tested for that. I think some of the manuals even say that.

IME the flights where we gate checked the seat w/o a bag it came back more beat up than checking it as luggage IN a car seat bag ($20). The smaller airlines seem to treat them better - one flight on a small plane had my luggage all left behind but they made sure the car seat made the transfer between planes.

I just used a luggage cart thing (you can buy them at Walmart) to wheel the car seat from gate to gate. It was super easy and worked well. The cart folds flat for storage in the overhead bins.
