What car?

Ok, I'm going to try to talk my DH into trading in our Ford Focus for something safer. He is going to think that I'm crazy, but maybe I can convince him....

What are some good family cars that aren't minivans and that get good gas mileage? I think the only minivan that DH might consider would be the Mazada5 since it is compact and gets better mileage. I would love an Odyssey, but I don't know if he would go for that.

What about the Ford Freestyle? Do people like that? The Malibu Maxx looks nice too or the Prius, but some extra seating would be nice.

I hope I can convince him!

I have a Freestyle and really love it! I find it gets about 27 mpg and that's with the AWD system.

It has several different configurations to chose from -- you can find out all the details on the ford website (if you haven't already)

The thing I love most about it, is it's use of Volvo technology for it's platform and the safety cage.

Most of all I would really encourage you to drive it -- that's when I really fell in love with the car.

Best of Luck! It's never an easy choice.

DH just bought a 2006 Corolla. It is supposed to get 40mpg on freeway. RF MA fits well center and outboard - I was able to get it installed much tighter with LATCH outboard, so I installed it there. When I can get to a tech - I will see if we can get it tighter in the center with the lap/shoulder belt.

You can compare current model year vehicles at www.informedforlife.org

The Malibu is a good choice if equipped with optional side curtain airbags. The Freestyle is a good choice, too, but doesn't get much better fuel economy than most minivans.

Subarus generally have top-of-the line crash test ratings, and are fun to drive. (I used to drive a 99 Forester and now have an 06 Legacy wagon, which gets an IIHS gold rating.) While the AWD cuts into the gas mileage, if you get a non-turbo engine, the mileage is decent. Also, their LATCH is rated until 60 lbs, which is nice.

The drawbacks of Subarus is that they are just now starting to put stability control in their sedans and wagons. Also, I don't know whether you ever need to put three seats across, but that would likely be very hard in the Forester, Legacy, or Outback.
