Hypothetical WWYD.

If forced to make this decision, would you....

FF a 28 pound 1.5 year old - in order to keep a 45 pound 4 year old in a harness.

~Or~

Booster the 45 pound "just turned 4 years old today" in order to keep the 1.5 year old rear facing?
(Assume the 4 year old can sit wonderfully in a booster.)

I have been thinking about this hypothetical situation while puzzling together my 3 across. No, I don't need to booster DS, or turn DD FF. I was just thinking, if I was forced to make this decision, what would I decide.

I was going to make this a poll but I want to know the reasoning behind your answer.
These are your only options. Don't say "buy new seats." :p

It would depend on the maturity of the 4 year old. There are some I know who I would be okay boostering if I HAD to make that choice. There are some I would definitely choose to FF the 1.5 year old.

If it was MY kids I'd buy new seats. :p

As you stated, if the 4 yr old can sit wonderfully in a booster, then theoretically that would be a safe option. A shoulder harness should provide adequate restraint if used correctly. We are assuming that it is positioned correctly and the child always sits in it correctly, yes?

However, the 1.5 yr old will not be "just as safe" in a FF seat.

So in that situation, I would choose booster and keep LO RF.

If the 4yo can really consistently sit wonderfully in a booster, it is a very easy choice for me -- booster and RF.

Very few 4yos can do that, so in the real world it would likely be a more difficult choice and would depend primarily on the 4yo's booster behavior.
