13 month old in GN...WHAT!!!

Ugg, I was over at a friends house this evening, they have son a 13mo, 27lb, probably 32 inches tall, that they just moved from a Britax Marathon to a GN. They turned the boy FF in late January, I have suggested they research ERF and had hit a brick wall. I was patiently waiting for the Parents article to come out so I could "leave a copy" for them ...I might still try, but I doubt that they will do anything.

The seat was installed incorrectly - borrowing outboard latches, we check the manual to make verify, so the seat gets installed with the seatbelt too..I hear comments on how stupid it is not to have lower latches in the center, and no response when I say that it is either latch or seat belt.

When the baby gets in the seat, the harness is at the second slot - WAY too high for the baby, and very loose. I tighten the harness and raise the chest clip to armpit level.

I think they may have gotten the GN to fit in an extended cab truck where the MA was tight, but I KNOW that the GN doesn't sit on the entire back seat because I tried to put my DD GN in there and I had overhang. So if this is the case should I say anything? I'm thinking no. I think that it is just a lost cause at this point. Heck maybe I can get a cheap MA...

I would abandon the rf'ing info and just provide correct use info if you think you can do it without creating an interpersonal problem. Perhaps you could just arrange a seat check for yourself and invite them along? Maybe the info would be better received from somebody else...

Some parents are receptive to best practice information and some aren't. The Nautilus does fit kids well who meet the minimum, and while we'd love to see them rf'ing longer, at least he has a HWH seat that will actually get him to a safe booster age. And on the bright side, at least they waited until he was over 1yr old to turn him. It's not ideal, and it's not great, but it is what it is and sometimes you have to work with what you have.

It's important sometimes to know which battles are worth fighting. If they aren't open to you helping with how to properly install the seat, then I'd try and point them to another resource. Proper use is even more important for a ff'ing child who has just recently met the minimums.

Thanks Trudy,
I am not going to push anything...I'm thinking that the correct use of center latch was almost pushing it anyway...They know that I know about car seat safety - I have even told them that I am planning to become certified when I save up a week's vacation, and that my dream job is to design carseats (I'm a mech engr), so if they want to ask anything, they can...if nothing, they can look up the borrowing latches and doubling up seatbelt/latch themselves and be introduced to a whole lot more.

I think the best thing I can do is set an example and be available if the have questions.
