Sooooo OT: Fire Safety

I figure with all of us car safety freaks here maybe some also know about fire safety. I am wanting to get escape ladders for our upstairs bedrooms and would love some advice. The kind that I mean are the kind that you store under the bed and theoretically even a child can attach them to a windowsill and climb out in an emergency. Some have standoffs on each rung (necessary?) some are nylon and "fire resistant" (should they be fire proof?) and some are UL rated (???). Has anyone done the research or have one that they would recommend? Also, it is recommended to have one for EACH bedroom...is one for the whole second floor enough?
Thanks for sharing!!!

i grew up in a 3-story colonial and my parents had 1 in my bedroom (cloest). it is recommended you have 1 for each bedroom in case you can't access the others. this was the early 80's, so ours was metal and could have fit under the bed. i think they showed me how to use it. they also had child-finder stickers on the windows - i've been meaning to do that in my house. do they still make those?

http://www.onestepahead.com sells all sorts of things,. We haven't gotten any for the 2 story side of the house, although Joyjoy's room may need one eventually.
We don't need them in the boys' room because their window is only 5 feet off the ground. lol

I used to have a ladder in my room when I was younger. I was never shown how to use it so I can't say if it was easy or not. But, I shared a room with my older sister so I guess she knew how.

As for the stickers, I heard they aren't recommended anymore. It makes it easier for predators to identify rooms that children sleep in.

They now recommend putting the stickers on the lower part of the child's bedroom door. This way when they are searching the house, they can identify which bedrooms might have children in them. Being on the bottom of the door, keeps them visible longer, since smoke rises and they are reflective so a flashlight will bounce off them.

No idea about the ladder, though. I would think one upstairs would be enough, since you have an alternate escape down the stairs. In most dwellings, there needs to be 2 routes of escape. However, it can never hurt to have more than you actually need.
