Car seat and airplane travel

DS is currently 3 years old and 32 lbs. We will be traveling by plane in June. Does he need a car seat on the plane? DH is driving out a week before us so he would have the car seat in his car if DS didn't need it on the plane.

Ideally, a child of that weight and age would be in a harnessed seat. Airplane seatbelts are only really designed for people at least 4 and at least 40 lbs.

You will find your child is going to be more comfortable and more well behaved in a CRS, anyway :)

At his age, I would probably be okay with him not in a carseat on the plane since you have a carseat waiting for him at your destination. He would be more comfortable in the carseat on the plane though. If it is a short flight (2 hours or less), then I wouldn't bother with it. If it was longer, it might be nice to have the carseat since it is more comfortable, especially if the child may want to sleep.

Thanks for the info. We have two flights to get to our destination. The first is about 2 hrs 45 min and the second flight is a 2 hour flight. I'm not sure which would be a bigger pain; dealing with a 3 year old who is crabby because he is not comfortable or carrying a Marathon through a couple of airports.

I would take the seat and find a way to carry it easier. He's used to sitting in his seat, so keeping him there may be easier, and more comfortable. It also would feel much safer and secure to me. Can you borrow (or buy if you travel frequently) something to strap it on like a back pack or attach it securely to a rolling carry on? Many people also use a luggage rack-some even put the kid in the seat on there if they have a good rack, but personally I would be worried it would break or soemthing, so I would bungee all the junk I needed onto the seat in a luggage rack and then hold hands w/ kid to give him some time to walk between flights. That is what we did when we flew w/ DD at 14 mos., but that was w/ DH also, so it was a little easier.
