Consensus on True Fit crotch strap...

Am I correct in understanding that it is okay for the TF crotch strap to be angled out, as long as the child isn't actually sitting on the buckle itself? I think this will be an important consideration for my chubby daughter.

And does anyone know if there are the same rules/issues with the BLVD?

I've never really got a difinite answer on this myself. I've emailed the manufacturer and received a response that the crotch strap must not be under the child, which is what I'm currently going by as it doesn't make a lot of sense to me to have them say the strap can be under, but the child cannot sit on the buckle, as I don't know anyone who would have their child actually sitting on the buckle. It would be too hard to click the buckle tongues into I would think. I've seen some people say that they are interpretting the manual to say that the crotch stap can be angled out from the child's body. I'm more comfortable going by what the manufacturer told me personally, though I know a couple people have said that CS reps don't always know the correct info. I'm more comfortable going by the manufacturer as I really don't know who else would know better than they would.

I just went out and compared my daughter in a rf Diplomat and rf TrueFit. She is 15 months, ~22/23 lbs, and wearing a disposable diaper with a onesie over top (wierd mid-winter heat wave here).

She has a good inch of room between her and the strap in the Diplomat. But she's already right up against the strap in the TrueFit. Right now her 3yo brother uses the TrueFit forward facing, and I was thinking of passing it down to her and getting him a GN. That is our cheapest short term solution. But I think it is unreasonable to think she won't be needing more space over the next couple rear-facing years. Besides, it is really hard to reach the rear harness adjuster in our squishy Suburban seats.

I doubt I'd worry. As she grows, they gain more in height and less in poundage. And once she's out of diapers, she'll have a bunch of room. I don't have time to find my pics, but if you do a search here, I've posted a pic of my DD at 2 years old on the FIRST crotch slot, and she fits fine (no diapers). She's now 2.5 and still has the same amount of room.

I agree that once diapers are off there is probably more room. Most people really shouldn't have to worry about this, but I worry about very large toddlers who may still be in diapers, etc. Not all kids are potty trained at 2 and some kids really are very big. These don't seem like they would be common problems however.

Also, since the True Fit had a continuous loop harness, couldn't you just leave the harness tight enough for your dd and not need to loosen/tighten it? That's what I do with my seat in case my dh needs to put dd in the car and I'm not there. He's not as carseat savvy ;)
