fabrics - what's best (re:sweating)?

Hi all,

Our son is 14mo (25lbs, under 30"). We are shopping for a convertible to replace our Chicco Keyfit 30.

I really like the design of the Maxi Cosi Priori, but the "metallic" fabric is similar to the Keyfit - and in the summer our son sweats it in.

So my question... are plush seats any better or more breathable? Or will kids sweat in anything? Is the amount of cushion a factor?

Thanks!

I'm not sure about the breathablility of the seat.

But in regards to the padding, sometimes the padding can take away from the length of time you can use the seat by raising your child up a tad more.

I do not consider padding when I am buying a seat.

It seems to vary from child to child which fabric is most comfortable or which makes them sweat.

Lack of air flow is a major factor, also, so you might want to check out the Sunshine Kids Radian carseat - it has a nice low profile and the sides are more shallow, so it allows more of a breeze.

Maybe this is just me, but I'd be more concerned about the weight limits than the fabric.

The Maxi Cosi for example... while it RF for a long time (35 lbs I think) only FF to 40 lbs. That means you're only going to get 5 lbs RF if you use the KeyFit to it's limit & keep baby RF in the Cosi... & 5 more pounds once you turn baby around. Since you're buying it after an infant seat, that's only about 10 lbs of total use.

There are a lot of other choices that still RF to 30-35 lbs and then FF to 50 to 65 lbs depending on the seat. Much better investment IMO.

I agree consider weight limits, harness slot heights, first, there may not really be much you can do about the sweating, not a lot of car seats offer good air flow.

I agree with all of that... what's your budget??

Under $250, although less is always better. I've been "decided" on the Britax Diplomat because of it's compact size. I've been told to avoid a Decathalon, which is similar with higher limits.

Today's choice is the First Years True Fit, which has the right weight limits, buckle strap positions, and comfy fabric, and the right price. It just looks really big - and my son weighs enough for the headrest to be required. I'm also concerned that if it is more upright it will be hard to adjust the harness straps every time I put him in. Any thoughts on that?

The true fit has a continuous loop harness which is nice because you don't have to loosen it every time you take the baby in and out. I have one and it is a pain to loosen but I only have to due that when the harness is too tight on DD which is rarely.

We haven't had any sweat issues with any of our three marathons - we have two plush ones and one denim. That said, we had HORRIBLE sweat issues with our companion infant seat.
