BV with advisory

well right after I bought my BVs I got a notice that told me to discontinue use of the top tether at 50 lbs on both of my BVs, due to them not working correctly or something. I am occasionally picking up a boy for my friend when she has my boys and he is 50 lb plus He still fits in the BV by height as well so I put him in it. My question is should I disconect the tether when he rides in it?

I know the recommendation is to use the tether at all times but I am not sure if I should in this case. The child in question is 6 years old and in Kindergarten, I don't always have a booster with me so I can't always let him use one as well as the fact he really does not sit well in it. He makes me so nervous in a booster.

Yes, you have to discontinue use of the tether at 50 pounds. Are any of your children small enough to use the seat safely with the tether? Would that open up a seat for the other child to use with a tether? If that's a possibility, I would try it. If it's not, I would be comfortable using the BLVD without a tether and a seat belt install.

Well...

We encountered this seat at a check a while back.

The other tech I was with (a good, experienced one) basically explained the issue to the dad the same way we explain the possible benefits of using a tether anchor past the vehicle manufacturer's limit: By the time it fails (IF it fails), it would have already done its job.

Now, this case is a little different, because it sounds like Britax DID experience the tether failing, as opposed to the hypothetical failure of tether anchors.

I can't recommend that you ignore the advisory, but I'm throwing that out there as food for thought.

Also if I remember correctly they now will replace the top tether for those with this advisory. At the time the advisory hit they were overwhelmed with the Regent explosion due the KDM video. I don't think at the time they could keep up production wise.

well this generally happens when I have no kids with me and I am picking up 2 kids in Kindergarten, I have a FF BV, a RF BV and a Regent. Both the kids I pick up are over 50 lbs, and the girl rides in my Regent due to torso size and it is the Madison, so I put the boy in my sons BV that is FF. It is for all of a 2-3 min ride. If I have a booster I will put him in it but I don't always as they were bought for my husbands and moms cars.

If you look on this site you will find the original findings about the tether failing. From what I can remember, the failing tether actually performed better in the hed excursion tests. What happened is that the hook opened a little bit allowing the seat to slide into the reclined position. But because it didn't perform EXACTLY as it should, it had to be recalled. The other thing that I read was that the hook could pinch a child's finger should they go back in the car and play with the top tether.... I'll see if I can find it. I asked about it one time and cannot for the life of me find the posting! Britax will send you a new top tether hook if you are concerned about it. It basically wraps around the existing tether strap like a d ring and has a tether hook on it.
