Question What is the law on how long you can use a car seat?

I am looking to purchase a new car seat and I am going to find out the manufacturer date first. But how long can you use a car seat past its manufacturer date? I am looking at the Recaro Signo and the manual says its good for up to 10 years.... Please help!

Whatever the manual says for a particular seat is how long that seat has been approved for use.
To the best of my knowledge, the only 'law' would be if your state had a proper use law. Then it would fall under inproper use to use it past the expiration.

As far as I know, the Signo has a 6 year life - which means you can use it 6 years after the date of manufacture.

I'd be interested in seeing where in the manual it states 10 years

My manual says nothing about expiration. I emailed Recaro in Sept. and they said the Signo/Como are only good for 6 years

There is no 'law' per se. If you are in a proper use state you MUST abide by the manufacturer's recommendations. Even if you aren't in a proper use state, it is never wise to exceed the expiry stated by the manufacturer.

The Recaro Signo has a six year expiration. Most convertibles do. You will see variances from 5 to 9 years depending on the type of seat and the manufacturer.
