Carseats are bad???????

My dad claims he saw a thing on TV a couple years ago at the most, saying that there is no proof that carseats save lives and that they are little more than a money grab. I know obviously this is BS but I am wondering if any of you recall seeing such a program? I'm really curious as to what he saw, hope one of you remembers this. Thanks.

It was probably from the authors who wrote "Freakonomics." If you do a search for that on this site, you'll likely come up with a lot of information.

Basically, yes, it's BS. Unfortunately (or fortunately!) it's been a while since I read that article, so I don't remember what the arguments were. Like I said, though, do a search at the top of the screen and you'll probably find a ton of threads on it.

All I can say is WOW! Thanks for showing me what this was all about.... I couldn't figure out why any "normal" person would say carseats are unsafe.

Not that i am promoting him, but just to clarify - he isn't saying carseats are bad per se....simply that for a child over age 1, they aren't necesarily better than a car seat belt, according to the statistics he references. He certainly wasn't arguing that they HARM children or are "unsafe", just that statistically, with the numbers he was using, they really didn't HELP much, in older kids.

Ghah, yes, I know the one. My sitter saw it too and thanks to that video she was (and is) totally disinterested in the fact that her 3yo is riding in a way outgrown seat.

It was on TED talks. The tagline is "once upon a time there was a dread disease"

Buncha BS! Right at the end in the Q&A a guy asks what about serious injuries, which is where it really counts and where anti-carseat guy is totally wrongo.
