It can happen to big kids too :(

I saw that on the news yesterday morning. It's so sad but the kid seemed to be recovering fairly well. They said he'd be going back to school after the break.

See, this is something I wonder about when looking at frontal crash tests, because you can see the head shooting forward. Now I'm even more paranoid :(
But am very glad he is OK and recovering.

This is one reason I advocate so strongly for ERF for children with health problems. There are many, many conditions, such as Down's, FTT, heart defects, celiac's, to name a few that result in delayed bone development.

my first guess is not enough head support.... that it came from whiplash

but my second guess comes from having recently noticed a pattern... with all the word on how being in the middle is best... I'm seeing a growing number of parents who, despite having only a lap belt in the center, using boosters and putting their seatbelted children in this spot... even though it is their ONLY child in the car.

So, while this would make the lapbelt fit better and not cause injury from the belt itself, or while the lapbelt may fit, since their spines are not as developed as an adult, who would still be more protected with the addition of a shoulderbelt, they are allowed to go much more forward than they otherwise would... and this could be why he was so badly injured.

do we know of any tests that strictly compare the effects on the spine with a shoulderbelt vs. lap-only belt?
