Another "how much longer" thread.

In another thread I was talking about my niece's car seat situation and I am thinking that giving her my Nautilus would be the best thing for her.

But before I do that, I need you guys to give me an idea about how much longer you think my DS will fit in his Radian.
He is 3 years, 2 months old and 43 pounds.

-How long do you think he has until he hits the top harness height? He has less than half an inch.
-But what if I go by the "tip of his ears" rule??
Would I be crazy to give away his Nautilus?

ETA: Sorry, I tried to shrink the photos.
Thing is, we can't afford to buy them a car seat right now with the holidays and all, but we should be able to buy ourselves another Nautilus or something within the next year or so.

It can vary so widely from kid to kid, but for my own, at that age, that amount of torso growth would be about a year.

Can you give them the Radian instead? It isn't as user-friendly as the Nauti, IMHO, so if they tend to uninstall/reinstall often, I'd lean toward giving them the Nauti, but the Nauti has higher top slots than the Radian, so it would be nice if you could keep it for your ds and give them the Radian.

I am going to need both seats sooner or later...
The Nautilus for the harness height and the Radian because I am expecting baby #3. My eventual plan was for the baby to go in the BLVD, DD in the RN and DS in the Nautilus.

So giving them the Nautilus would work out better if I could replace the less expensive seat. It shouldn't be too big a deal if DS can last in the Radian until the baby who will be born in June outgrows the infant seat. (I want a Key Fit 30.)

Hope I'm not being too confusing.

Wow, I thought MY kid was tall!

I'd guess he has 9 months--maybe a year, but it's so hard to say. One growth spurt and he could get there almost overnight, you know?

Personally, I'm not a big fan of using the Radian once the kid's shoulders are over the top slots, but you certainly CAN, and it would buy you a little time to get the other seat back or figure out some other arrangements if it were to happen quickly.
