so i was out walking the dog and my neighbor drove home with her grandson who she's pretty much raising, I think he's 6 but not much bigger than my 4yo, riding in the font seat of her hyundai sedan. we've talked about car seat safety before, because they took him out when he was 2 "because he's such a big boy" (he's actually small for his age). now i know they're not deliberately putting his life in danger, but it didnt even look like he was buckled. there was a cop driving right behidn them and I was so tempted to flag him down and see if he would at least give her a warning. obviously he's nowhere near 80# which is the law here for carseat, and i would think riding in front is illegal? what would you say to her without being confrontational?

Maybe:

The 5 point test from www.carseat.org and the page that goes with about WHY.

"I couldn't help but noticing. . ."

"Did you know that it is really dangerous to have someone under 13 in the front (especially with an airbag)?" - it's on the visor of the car and/or in the manual as well

"Did you know that 'they' changed the CR law? It used to be. . .but now it's . . ."

It's so hard to see people putting their children in danger either out of ignorance or stubborness.

If your car seats are appropriate for his size...show them to her and him...let him try them out...offer to go shopping with them to pick out a really cool seat.

Show her the crash test footage!

When I got a MA for my best friend, I tried my days from turning 6 yrs old nephew in it and he LOVED it. I could have installed it in the car and he would have gone riding with me! I then went and weighed him at 49 pounds...his shoulder was just at the top height. He's probably been in a booster since 3ish.
