When to Measure Height

So, I have been looking at C lately in his MA and thinking I might need to move him up to the 2nd from top slots. At least that is how it looks when I buckle him in. By the time we are at the end of our drive, he clearly still fits in his current slots. Having the same issue with him in the Nauti as well. So, to determine harness height, do I measure him at the slots at the beginning or end of our ride? On both those seats it seems like such a huge jump to the next height...llike the harness will be coming from the middle/top of his ears.

Put him in the seat, and stick a pen or ruler through the slot in the shell (not just the cover, it can be misleading) and over his shoulder. Compare the ruler to the ground. If it slopes up, you need to move the straps up.

Even though he might still fit the lower slots correctly by the end of the ride, what happens if you get in a crash as you pull out of your driveway, or shortly thereafter, before he has settled into his seat? The requirement for FFing is straps coming from at or above. The next slot up would definitely be above, and therefore is definitely OK.
