Infant restraint question

I've searched the forum, but I've been unable to find anything relating to this topic. Anyway, a friend of mine came over to today with her new baby (5 weeks old). I asked her if that was a new Graco infant carseat model because he was strapped in wierd. She said that was the way the nurse at the hospital told her to do it. I wish I could draw a picture for you because it may be hard to describe what she did. But you know how with the 5-point harness, you put their arms through and then clip that plastic clip, and then you have the other clip that goes inbetween their legs? Well, not only did she put his arms through the straps, but his legs also. Does that make sense? So basically, the opening where his legs are supposed to go there is nothing. I have never seen anyone do this before (and I haven't read this in the instruction manual), but since a nurse told her to do it, maybe they know something that I don't. Is it because he's a newborn (he was just over 6 lbs. when he was born). If so, when does she stop doing that, at what weight? I have gotta say, if that is what you're supposed to do, it looks extremely uncomfortable (no wonder why he cries the second she put him in it). But if my description doesn't make sense, let me know and I'll try to think of a better way to word it. Thanks in advance! I just want to make sure the baby is safe since she's driving back to Minnesota today from Wisconsin.

The nurse must have been standing on her head watching them put him in. Uhhh, those straps down there are hip straps, not butt straps. Seeing as newborn shoulders are really soft and squishable (remember that whole birth canal thing they just did?) they can fly out of those shoulder straps pretty easily if they don't have the hip straps and the chest clip where they should be.

Very very very unsafe.

Thank you so much for the replies! I'll call her now...hopefully she won't already be on the road.

Tell her about this website!!!

Also if you go into the Coffee Break forum there is a thread about using infant seats....someone posted a pic of their newborn in his seat...He's in the RIGHT way.

Also get her manual out...if she doesn't have one find the number on the seat and call Graco for a new manual.

I think I'd also ask my friend to contact the hospital/her doctore to report the incorrect info given to her.

How many other little ones are being sent home the same way? And how many new parents don't know any better?

The Ped. might not even know any better -- mine recommended turning Leila FF at only 4 months  :( -- but, yes it's worth a shot ... it would be best to have the new AAP policy statement (printable through the Pediatric Journal site) along with information on who to contact for the nursing staff to become CPSTs (none are here).
