Swaddling in a Carseat?

Is there any safe way to keep a baby swaddled (or wrapped up somehow) while still safely strapped into their carseat?

The only safe way to do that is to get the harness tight and THEN put the blanket over the baby. I've found that tucking it under their feet, then around the sides is confining enough to be soothing for most newborns who like to be swaddled. You can tuck it up over their arms too but mine have all liked their arms out (to suck on their hands.)

There is a swaddle blanket made now that has individual legs. The back of the blanket is quite thin, and basically how you use it is to put baby's legs in, lay the back of the blanket flat behind baby's back, buckle baby and tighten straps, then wrap the blanket around over top of baby. It doesn't go above the armpits really, but I saw a mom using one at work a few weeks back and was really impressed - it didn't interfere with the harness at all.

Of course I don't remember the name of it now, but there's definitely one out there that works great. :)

(When I say quite thin, it's maybe the weight of a t-shirt, not something that I'd have any concern about being behind a baby - especially given that it's not interfering with the harness straps at all.)

I brought DD home in a similar one, that did not have individual legs. It had a slot in the back for the crotch strap to come up through. Very thin material. What I did was line up the crotch strap slot (with the crotch strap pulled through, obviously), then put baby in, buckle, then swaddle. It's designed so that it goes perfectly around a 5-point harness. The material is also so lightweight, and stretchy, that I really don't think there is a way that it could interfere with the straps. The straps would just move the bundling, not the other way around. It must have been Kiddopotamus brand because I remember the bear velcro tabs on it.

I'm attaching some pics of her in it. The headroll part is not part of the bundling. BTW, it's a BabyTrend seat, and these pics were at 2 days old. DD was 8 lbs, 19.75" at birth. I'm not sure what she dropped to but fitting properly was never an issue.

I also did this with Seth. There was no way it interfered with the harness, and even the fleece swaddle blankets were so thin that it was no different then him wearing microfleece.

I still think a lot of people are torn on the whole no aftermarket products..... however, if i have another colicky baby I would probably do this again...

Looks like its a thin micro fleece. How do the techs feel about it?

This is exactly what the lady at work was using and it worked great - harness was perfectly snug, laying in a flat line, not out of position or sitting unnaturally at all. Seems to me the baby was about 2 months old though, so like Jools said, it's hard to say how it would work on a newborn. It was great on the baby I saw it on though.

I have two of those and actually wondered why they have a hole in the back. Now I know! My son doesnt like them anymore though, but it would have been nice when he was smaller!

I think she was about 1wk old here, so not quite 7#. I did have to arrange it around her shoulders some b/c she wasn't quite long enough for the whole thing, but it worked well. We rarely used it though, mostly the few times we took her somewhere and couldn't take her carseat inside w/ us. It gave her a layer between her and the cold carseat.

I had two swaddle-hating kids, but with babies leaving the hospital I roll up a rec'ing blanket about 1/3 of the way, tuck it on one side of the buckled baby, roll up the other side and tuck it on the other side of baby. Then they are safe AND warm.

The instructions for my seat specifically allow aftermarket products, as long as they are not more than 1/4" thick behind the baby. To me, the bundling in this case is no different than clothing.

BabyTrend Flex-Loc (though the seats are all the same, it's just the bases that are different I believe), as stated in my original post with the pics ;)
