Expiration

I just responded to a Craigslist ad asking the DOM of a Roundabout. She wrote back and told me it was 9/10/01!
Obviously I won't buy it, but I'm trying to convince her not to sell it. Is there a good site you can give me a link to fully explaining the reasoning behind the 6 year expiration? And possibly even what you should do with the seat?
I didn't want to just explain it to her, because I thought she may just dismiss it coming from a random person she doesn't know.

Thanks so much! :)

I responded to a CL ad for a Marathon (for $100), and asked what the DOM was. The woman told me it was 12/2002. So...it's expiring next month. And someone is certainly going to be uninformed enough to buy it. I responded back to her with "Oh. It's expiring next month...Thanks, though..." She never emailed back.

At least they choose not to respond. I have gotten nasty emails back when I find out the car seat is expired and I tell them they shouldn't sell it. I even had a fireman claiming to be a CSR Tech tell me a 12 year old car seat was perfectly safe.
(I found his resume online, CSR tech was nowhere on it.)

In addition to the expiration related links already posted, Britax's own online FAQ at http://www.britaxusa.com/support/faqs.aspx has this blurb about expiration under the General Questions category:

Q. How long can my child seat be used?

A. Britax recommends that the use of a child seat be discontinued after six years from date of manufacture or if the seat has been involved in a severe crash. After six years, technology has changed, components degrade from the environment (depending on how and where stored), parts get lost or installed incorrectly, or instructions and labels may not be available or not legible. The child seat may be unsafe and should be destroyed.
