However, I think the most compelling reason is that the baby/child needs a carseat at the destination and you need to carry it with you to make sure that it is not lost or damaged.

The chance of being in an accident or encountering strong turbulance is actually much lower than the chance of having your carseat lost or damaged. Anyone who has seen how luggage handlers deal with the luggage know that it is not treated well and a car seat could easily be damaged. Luggage is always lost and car seats get lost too. I know several people in real life who had their car seats lost - even one who had her car seats lost when she gated checked them.

Very interesting. Why doesnt the FAA just come out say that car seats are required for children under a certain age?

Even even 1 little life could be saved, it would be more than worth it.

We've only flown once with DS when he was 6 months old and we didn't get him a seat. We decided after that trip that the money saved wasn't worth the risk of him being injured in bad turbulence (which may be rare, but it happens, just like car accidents).

Now that he is older (18 months - and I've felt this way for awhile) I truly can't imagine trying to keep him in my lap for an entire flight. He would want to run up and down the aisle, I'm sure. I think having him strapped into his car seat would be familiar, comfortable, and easier for everyone.
