Back-Up Seat? Booster?

What would you get for a back-up for an (almost) 4 year old? Right now he is riding in a graco nautilus. I don't think another harness seat is within the budget, so I was thinking about a graco turbo booster (full back). Right now his back-up is a cosco highback which has to be used in booster mode  . I don't think words can describe how much I hate that seat. He is over 40 pounds. This seat would only be used for emergencies where using his GN isn't an option (think last minute ER visits or if there was a car accident).

Thanks!

If he sits well in a booster and the Turbo fits him it's a good booster on a budget, and it does come apart to store easily, so I think that's a decent choice.

If you knew the car he would be using it in had head support you could find an Apex for $100, but that still might be out of your budget.

Yeah- really the current cars don't have headrests, in an emergency I wouldn't be able to guarantee it anyway, plus $100 would be really pushing the budget. I'm planning on paying $25 towards it as part of his b-day present and my mom will cover the rest (he's my brother- BIG age gap).

Right now my other 2 1/2 y/o brother's back-up is an OHS tribute  which is bad, and hopefully will never have to be used. It doesn't scare me as much as trying to use the high back though (I mean, PLASTIC seat belt guides???). In an emergency I would hope we wouldn't have to drive that far, and hopefully an emergency doesn't arise.

is he using the coscohigh back in booster mode because he is over 40 lbs or over the really low top slots?
Because if it is a height issue, there are a number of booster with higher slots you could get...if he is over the 40 lbs limit...it's pretty much a booster i guess, due to financial concerns. But for a spare backup seat in emergency only...I'd be okay with it.

He was around 39 lbs at his last doctors appointment several months ago, so I'm guessing he's over 40 by now (he's grown at least an inch since then). He outgrew the high back around 6 months ago (actually I think she was using it with his shoulder slightly above the top harness slot) and graduated to the GN, but I didn't try to mess with it in booster mode until a couple days ago. He's tall for his age.
