Rear facing safer in side impact...

Someone was asking me why this is true... I was able to explain why RFing is safer for frontal crashes and even rear crashes... but I couldn't remember exactly why for side impact crashes. Can you refresh my brain cells...? Thanks!

It's because *most* side crashes still occur with some element of forward movement...like when you are going through an intersection and the car comes from the side running a stop sign and hits you. So you have your body continuing to move forward as the car is hit... a FF kid will fly well out of the sides of the side wings and THEN move sideways into the point of impact. A RF kid will stay cradled in the seat shell and the whole seat will rotate towards the impact, while the kiddo stays contained.
