Yes. In my experience there are a lot of techs IRL that know next to nothing about specific carseats.

There are a lot of techs who don't keep up on new seats, but there are a lot of techs who don't have time to sit on message boards like this, and who work in areas where the people they're helping tend not to have newer seats.

Honestly, though, the explanation given to your class about telling the difference between seats wasn't really a bad one. I have a Nautilus myself, yet while I was reading your description, it didn't pop into my mind. It clearly doesn't recline enough to get to 45 degrees. It also has only one belt path, and a convertible will have two. Obviously it's best to read the instructions and/or stickers on a seat, but as a quick overview, those aren't bad criteria.

I think I'm the ONLY one who keeps up on new seats. I constantly send info to people locally about new seats... they just have no idea.

I'm the one people go to at checks here for info on new seats or for recs for seats, lol. We were always just told to look for the belt paths, 1 is ffing only, and 2 is convertible. Some people still can't get that right! ;) Most of the techs, all but like 2, do this job b/c they were made to so while it's something they care about, it's not something they necessarily have a passion about. They're decent techs, but they tend to learn all their info on new seats at our yearly updates.
