Convertible Car Seat and Air Travel

Hello, I'm new here, I'm hoping you can help me out. My family is stationed overseas and we're moving back to the states in Dec. I have a 9 month old who is now 21 pounds and 28 inches long. He's outgrown his infant seat and I have been doing a lot of reading online about which seat to get. I chose the Recaro Signo. I ordered it online and it's being shipped to my dad's in the states, and he's supposed to ship it to me here in Japan. They have only one convertible car seat here on base (they just got it in today, before today they didn't have any) and it's the Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite. I plan on putting my son in a carseat on the airplane, but both the Recaro and the Alpha are wider than the airplane seats. On one flight the seats are 16.5 inches. According to elitecarseats.com the Recaro is 18 inches wide. We measured the Alpha and it's also 18 inches wide. Do you think they can still be squeezed into the small airplane seats? I'm considering having my dad mail the Recaro to me so that we can travel back to the states with it, but I know that the Recaro is supposedly huge, so I don't even know if it will fit. Plus, I'm sure it'll be a pain to lug around (it's 22 pounds!). I'm considering just buying the Alpha and using that for air travel. Although the Alpha Omega is 18 inches wide, it overall doesn't seem to be "huge"- although I have nothing to compare it to. I just hate spending another $140 on a seat that I won't use once we're done traveling (SIP is very important to me, so we'll be using the Recaro). What are your thoughts? First of all, do you think these seats will fit? If so, do you recommend using the huge, bulky Recaro and saving money, or spending $140 on another seat that might be more convenient for air travel. I hope this all made sense. Thanks for your input and advice!!!

You can take the base off the AOE and that will make the bottom of the seat smaller to fit in the plane seat better. I haven't used one on a plane, but I imagine it would fit. And since you have an older baby, he won't need the full 45 degree recline that a newborn would.
