I want to get car seat tech certified some day, as I am very passionate and vigilant about child safety. That being said, I am constantly making people aware of car seat laws by giving out this website, Transport Canada, etc. Today on our private school board internal BBS system, I emailed someone who was selling a car seat for $5.00 as it was over 6 years old (almost 7 years old - Graco seat). She just emailed me back to thank me and tell me that she had disposed of the seat - I told her to cut straps off and place at curb for disposal.
Anyway, she is questioning the expiry law as she just came from a 2nd hand consignment store that is selling used car seats, and she wants me to point her in the exact wording of the expiry law. She is worried now that she saw some older seats for sale. I sent her the link on the Transport Canada page "How long are they safe?" It clearly states that you must use seats to manufacturers directions and so if using a seat incorrectly or expired, you may be found guilty of breaking the law. I know there is also a link on Transport Canada or Health Canada about selling used car seats, baby walkers, etc. at Garage Sales or Consignment shops, but I can't locate at the moment as I'm trying to feed the baby. Does anyone have this link?
Can someone just clear this up for me, either with more links that I can send her, or, with clearer language from your own tech experiences?
I have emailed our Tech director at the school board who is in charge of our BBS system and mentioned to her that they need to be more vigilant when posting used baby equipment, especially car seats. Could there be liability issues for our school board if they allow a sale of an expired seat? The transaction is private and board says they have no liability, but I'm not sure about this as they authorize each posting - supposedly they check the accuracy and legimitacy of each posting to make sure that it fits within our school board's guidelines of for sale items. What do you all think?
Thanks, Tiger
