Unbelievable tech actions!

A relatively new tech was working at one of our seat checks on Saturday. The parents came in with the latch straps attached to the two outboard tether anchors and the tether attached to the tether anchor in the middle. They put the seat like that because they knew the seat was safest in the middle seat position.  So my boss and the new tech were trying to get the seat out. She had undone one of the latch straps and the tether and she asked him to undo the other latch strap from the other outboard tether anchor. For some reason, he thought he was supposed to cut the tether strap. So he got out his knife (he's a firefighter; they always have knives with them) and cut. Only he didn't cut the tether strap which would have been stupid enough. HE CUT THE LAP AND SHOULDER BELT OF THE CAR!!!!! He actually cut right thru it. (BTW, the latch strap, as badly positioned as it was, was black; the seatbelt was tan). The car, of course, was a Mercedes. The estimate to fix it? $1300!!!! The county will pay, but can you imagine?????

Oh and guess what. I've made it perfectly clear to my boss that he will not be working at any checks that I'm in charge of!

 Had the parents used the seatbelt, too, along with their, ahem, "creative" use of the LATCH straps, top tether, and all 3 top tether anchors? Just curious, and I can't imagine why he cut the belt with the knife. Maybe he's so accustomed to cutting belts at severe crash scenes, such as situations where the emergency personnel use the "jaws of life." But an improperly installed carseat hardly warrants such an action.

Oh.my.God. I can't even imagine a layman being stupid enough to do something like that, let alone a certified tech. :(

OMG - I'm sorry, but I cannot help but laugh because that is so completely absurd !

What were the parents reactions ?

You're right! It is totally absurd!

The mom was fine with it (you know we'll get it fixed); the dad was mad someone sliced up his car (and rightly so!).
