Question What would be safer?

Child is 29lbs, almost 3.5yrs

Which would be the safer RF scenario?

Radian, tethered or
True Fit (obviously no tether) but with tested SIP according to manufac.

Seating position is outboard captain's chair of 05 Grand Caravan.

That is a tough call. They both are great seats rearfacing, with our without the tether. Do you get a good install with both in that seating position? Are you able to get the radian at a recline that is comfortable for your older child? Which seat is easier for you to use and which does the child like more? I think it really could be a toss up as to which seat to choose.

I am not totally sold on the idea that a rearfacing tether is a must-have safety feature. It is nice and I have used it in the past with my Britax seats, though I would be equally likely to use another seat that works well for us if it didn't have a rearfacing tether (except in our truck where I preferred the tether since there was glass right behind the seating position).

well, since there is no nhtsa standard for side protection, but just being harnessed (and especially rf) would improve side impact performance, not to mention that there is tons of eps foam and the frame on the Radian is so solid, I'd probably say a tethered rf seat.

RF is so safe that I would not let a RF tether (or lack thereof) be a determining factor unless all else (especially maximum weight limit) is equal. :twocents:

There's no way to tell. My guess is that both options provide as close as possible to optimum safety and that any variations in preformance would be dependent on accident specifics rather than one option being the best in all cases.

I'd be wanting to tether my kid, if I had a choice and both seats were otherwise equal (fit to car, ease of climbing into it). :twocents:

Thanks everyone. Jools, yeah, I am a believer in the rf tether moreso than the sip, so I was leaning that way but wanted to hear some techs chime in, too :)
