Flying with seats?

We will be flying to Europe this December and I remember reading various posts where people have been denied the opportunity to bring an FAA approved seat onboard an international flight. How does one choose an airline in order to avoid this? Is it more common or always the case on non US carriers? What are the rules for using seats on the return leg or intra-European flights?

It's pretty much the case on non American carriers that rear facing seats and seats for children over 3 or under six month are denied. If you fly an American carrier, though, your FAA approved seats are good to go for any age in any direction, provided it's appropriate for your child.

I'm not positive, but I believe the way I've read it on some sites is that you may use a forward facing seat from 6-35 months, but at 36 months they magically fit in the belt.

We flew British Midlands with Piper when she was 15 months and 17 pounds and in a Britax Advantage (20 pound minimum FFing limit). Our choices were 1) turn her forward, 2) not use the seat, 3) leave the plane. We chose option 1. They gave us a belt loop of seatbelt to attach to my belt. In case of emergency I was to remove her from her carseat and put her in the loop on my lap. Riiiiiightt..... That's why I lugged a 20 pound seat halfway around the world. Needless to say, we haven't flown, and will not fly British Midlands, with Piper. In fact I think we've only flown American carriers since then since she's still in a seat and I don't want to fight with anyone about the FAA's validation.
