Thanks Hevy. I was hoping I could get a Mom to put DD back in a booster because she's not 80 pounds. Bummer. I guess I should work on hoping she doesn't turn DS FF at 1yr.

I don't know where that came from, it was posted before but it's not accurate. http://www.nj.gov/oag/hts/childseats/childseats_newlaw.html
This law has not changed since then, it is still in effect as of this day.

Not sure what's wrong about the IIHS listing. It's simply an abbreviated version of the full law.

Must be in child restraint
7 years and younger and less than 80 pounds

Comparing it to the wording of Michigan's new law - which IIHS lists as "7 years and younger and less than 57 inches" and which I know means "car seat or booster until 8th birthday unless they reach 57" first" - I'd say the NJ laws means that a car seat or booster until 8th birthday unless the child reaches 80 lbs first. Once they turn 8, no seat is required regardless of weight.

So

Does that mean that an 8 year old that is 70 pounds needs to be in a CR?

No, it doesn't mean that.

and

Or does it mean if the child is 6 and 81 pounds, they don't need a CR?

Yes, it means that.

You're right, It's the wording I think that doesn't sit right with me. There are some people out there who think 7 and under means at 7 they stop using it. I know MOST people don't, but some do, so it's the wording.
My apologies :)
