Question Older vehicles and carseat safety

Hi! My husband and I are looking to purchase an older second vehicle. Today we looked at a 99 GMC Jimmy. When checking out the interior, I couldn't find any tether anchors (behind the back seat). There is no LATCH system in this vehicle, but I assumed that EVERY vehicle would have floor anchors..... am I wrong? This would be for a FF install, Radian Premier.....

Any tips?

Because of the classification of the Jimmy (not considered a passenger vehicle as per the legal definitions) they were exempt from offering a designated tether anchor location. That basically means you can't have a forward-facing car seat in the vehicle. Contact the manufacturer (not the dealer) and if it's a hard top and not a soft top, they may be able to steer you in the right direction for getting one installed (it will cost you though). If you can't get an answer (either yes or no) give Barb at Transport Canada a call and she'll see if it's possible or not.

Most older vehicles either have top tether anchors or have the ability to retrofit them. Some are easier than others, just as some vehicles are more car-seat friendly than others.

'99 Jimmy should be outer (closest to the tailgate) cargo hooks. This should be identified in the seatbelt section of the manual, or you can confirm with GM. My mom has a '95 Jimmy.

There are some domestic SUVs with cargo hooks as approved tether locations, that's why people should consult their owner's manuals. Keep in mind that this is obviously an exception and not a rule, as cargo hooks are generally NOT approved locations.

The Jimmy/Blazer and I believe the Trailblazer are three I can think of off the top of my head.. I could consult my LATCH manual but it's outside in the van from my checks this weekend.

Additionally, in some vehicles the retrofit tether anchor replaces the cargo anchor hardware, so that is of course something to be aware of.
