While watching our local 24 hour news station News 8 Austin I saw a small blurb on our local Safe Kids chapter along with Safe Riders Traffic Safety Program (sponsored by the Texas Department of State Health Services in cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation) was putting on presentations to elementary age children and performing child seat checks today through Wednesday in honor of National Child Passenger Safety Week is September 20 - 27th.
I was sad to see in the small video blurb on the news (filmed at one of the school presentations) that the "models" used for their presentation where improperly restrained. Dolls where used instead of real children and a doll much too small for a booster was being displayed in a HBB and another doll was in a convertible seat with the chest clip WAY too low. It saddened me to see that an organization that could have have been a good influence for this age group letting them know that it safer to be in a harnessed seat and that it is not "uncool" to be in a harness missed the opportunity. I know that most elementary age children are of booster size but they could have at least used an appropriately sized doll for the booster and made sure that all harnessed seats where appropriately fitted.
There is a great video on the Safe Riders home page though, "Securing Our Future":
"Securing Our Future is a video that provides basic information about child passenger safety. Designed primarily for parents, it provides an overview of the need for restraining children, types of child restraints and how to use them, and resources for additional information."
You must have a recent version of the RealPlayer to play these video
