rule on accessories??

I know I have seen talk, about using things like head supporters and stuff. Is it ok if its FROM the manufacturer of the car seat? I see Graco has a seat protector with pockets, which I would like to get one, but I dont want to use something that may compromise safety. and, are there any head supports that are ok? Ill be getting a SS1 for the baby. I dont really like using rolled up blankets, but will if needed

The general 'rule' is this: if it doesn't come with your seat, don't add it. The reason is the add-on accessories give a false sense of security, whether that security means a tighter fit in the car, or a tighter harness fit on your child. Either way, it could mean the difference between no injuries and grave injuries in a car crash. Also, anything that doesn't come with your seat hasn't been tested with YOUR seat, so we have no idea how it would hold up in a crash.

As for the seat protector, they again haven't been tested with your seat. If you are worried about protecting your seats, you can safely use a thin towel or blanket under the car seat, or a piece of shelf liner. I've personally had car seats installed, TIGHTLY, in my truck for over 2 years and have no permanent seat damage from any of the car seats.

some things made by the manufacturer are not for the seat you have. Graco makes things for use with certain seats that aren't compatible with others.

for seat protectors, we prefer not to see them, but I'm happier if it's one that I know has been crash tested with the seat in question, which the graco would be... but you still need to check to make sure it is not affecting the install... that it is very thin and will not compress.

Really, I've never needed seat protectors, and I have cloth, which is harder to keep clean than the leather.

and for head support, while rolled blankets can help with baby's head tilting to the side, side tilting is fine. any flopping forward shouldn't be there because the recline should be 45* for a newborn. Headrests won't help with this issue.

all of the ss1s come with some type of headrest, though.
