Can safe kids get hwh seats?

I thought I had heard that safe kids could get them for a discount. Anyone know? I know a family with a 40 pound 2 year old. Mom is looking to put her 50 pound 4 year old into a backless booster (no headrests available) and move 2 year old into the 4 year old's high back booster.

I have contacted the local safe kids to ask about getting a high weight seat like a nautilus at a discount. She has no idea what I'm talking about (for both hwh seats and a discount). She told me they are having a checkpoint where they'll have the high back combo seats. That is better than the backless option for the 4 year old I guess. I was hoping that safe kids could get a seat at a discount and then I'd raise the money to buy the seat. So, can they get a discount or anything like that?

The only HWH seats I'm aware of through safe kids around here are Titans. The SLVHD has them and sells them at a discount. Really, it's about the poorest HWH option, but is probably sufficient for a 40 lb 2 yo.

I think it depends on the coalition and what they choose to/are able to buy. I believe that not all manufacturers give discounts, too, so even if a coalition has some of the "better" HWH seats, it doesn't mean they got them at a discount.

I don't think most coalitions have access to hwh seats or can just order one with a discount. That's the main reason KDM was founded. Low income families have a hard time getting hwh seats.

Our local coalition wrote a grant and got a bunch of Cosco Apex seats. We give them out sparingly from what I understand.

I'm a Safe Kids coordinator and I can get the Apex for $92.00 and the Nautilus for $122.00. Where are you? Even if they can't get it at a discount they might be able to help financially. I know I would.

The safe kids cpst only knows about hwh special needs seat. She sees nothing wrong with a 40 pound 2 year old in a booster because he's 40 pounds and not special needs. She has never heard of the Nautilus, Apex, radian, britax, etc. She must have taken her courses a long time ago or maybe they don't go over hwh seats? I wish one of the lower cost seats would work for this kid, but the van has bench seats with no headrests. The older brother is 50 pounds at age 5, so I think he should get a seat that harnesses to 65 pounds, not 50. Although, that would be better than nothing... I'll have to see how much money I can raise. I just feel so bad knowing a 2 year old in my town (who I have babysat) will be in a booster seat. Oh, and I live in Utah.

You've gotten spoiled by the techs on this board :)

Most of the conventional HWH seats are fairly new, so a lot of techs aren't familiar with them yet.

The Apex would probably be the cheapest option in that situation, but since the car doesn't have headrests, that's out. Nautilus is your next-best bet.

Have you put the family in touch with the Kyle David Miller Foundation? I'm sure there's a waiting list, but it can't hurt.

I told mom about KDM foundation and urged her to put in an application. I have heard that their waiting list can take over 6 months and this kid needs a seat now. Maybe I should become a cpst...
