Tonight at dinner, my 3 1/2 year old DS asked about how laws are made. We used child restraint laws as an example since it was something he could relate to. We are in MN, which has no requirement over age 4. His friends are starting to turn 4 and DS will be 4 this fall, so he knows that some of his friends might not be in car seats any more. He dictated the following letter to our legislators:
My name is XXX. I live in XXX. I am almost 4 years old. I ride in a car seat with a harness. After my birthday, I will still ride in a car seat because I want to be safe. My moms told me when kids turn 4, they can be in no car seats. I think that is wrong. That makes me feel sad and grumpy. I think the law should say kids have to ride in car seats until they are older, like 10. Some of my friends will stop riding in car seats when they are 4. That worries me a lot. That's thumbs down. We want it to be a good law because then my friends will be happy and safe.
Our plan is to type his letter up and send it with an accompanying letter from one or both of us about our thoughts regarding the current laws.
