Car Seat Letter from my DS

Tonight at dinner, my 3 1/2 year old DS asked about how laws are made. We used child restraint laws as an example since it was something he could relate to. We are in MN, which has no requirement over age 4. His friends are starting to turn 4 and DS will be 4 this fall, so he knows that some of his friends might not be in car seats any more. He dictated the following letter to our legislators:

My name is XXX. I live in XXX. I am almost 4 years old. I ride in a car seat with a harness. After my birthday, I will still ride in a car seat because I want to be safe. My moms told me when kids turn 4, they can be in no car seats. I think that is wrong. That makes me feel sad and grumpy. I think the law should say kids have to ride in car seats until they are older, like 10. Some of my friends will stop riding in car seats when they are 4. That worries me a lot. That's thumbs down. We want it to be a good law because then my friends will be happy and safe.

Our plan is to type his letter up and send it with an accompanying letter from one or both of us about our thoughts regarding the current laws.

That is very cute! I think it's great that he understands the difference. Now, if only Pawlenty could figure it out

To your little guy! I think this is an awsome idea as well as being awsome that he understands that he is safer!

An update, *I* got a letter back from Governor Pawlenty. DS was VERY disappointed that he did not get one since the letter was his. (I did include a letter accompanying his that identified my reason for writing as his letter -- along with reasons why the law should be changed. )

The letter we got was a form letter --

"Thank you for contacting my office with your comments supporting changes to Minnesota's Child Passenger Restraint laws.

I appreciate your input regarding this matter and will keep your suggestions in mind as my administration moves forward.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact me. Active and thoughtful citizens like you make Minnesota a great state in which to live."

Let's just say that our family disagrees with our current governor on MANY issues. This being just one.

DS is hoping HE gets a letter from our state senator or representative, both of whom he has met before on several occasions.
