Question for the Techs

I'm just curious but what is the procedure for confiscating a seat? Can a parent refuse or do you have the final word? What about garage sales and the like can you confiscate seats then? What do you do when you take one? Do you give them a new seat?

surrender, not confiscate

You can't take a seat without the owners permission. That's called stealing. Getting certified gives you an education, but it doesn't give you rights and privelages beyond the average citizen. We can explain why the seat is not safe to use and ask that they turn it over to us, but we have no authority to seize it forcibly. Some techs might get a little creative in their wording to make it appear that they have that authority but I have never felt comfortable doing so. Personally, I prefer to say that someone surrendered a seat rather than that I confiscated it. That more accurately reflects the situation.

Right ... I was taught to start off saying somethign like "Well, how would you like a brand new seat?" & then teach the parent why the other one isn't safe (damaged, expired, recalled) & explain that we'll most likely use the seat for training purposes -- but, keep it till the end of the event just in case they come back & want it regardless of the info we've given them ... after the event is done & the doors are close we cut the harness straps & write "DO NOT USE" in permenant marker because some of the other non-CSPT volunteers had taken seats in the past thinking they were freebies

There was also the situation where a seat was simply incompatible, but brand new so the parent obviously wanted the seat in order to try it in a different vehicle and/or return it to the store ;)
