I'm getting hugs off starlight and then using the seat as a spare until it expires in October. I did get it from someone I know who said it wasn't in an accident so I'm 100% sure it's safe.

I still don't think I would use it. Even if you know the person. You don't know the history of the seat for 110% certainty.

I would just keep the cover.

Yes, we trade seats, or parts/covers, etc.

But, we all know what is acceptable use and what is not. For all we know, the seat above had the harnesses run through the d/w or washing machine, or sprayed w/ simple green, whatever. We all know that this isn't acceptable, but most lay people do not. :shrug-shoulders:

Even if the seat isn't safe to use, and that's a choice/decision drlynne will get to make for herself, the cover itself is worth far more than $5!!!

Don't people trade seats on this site all the time? (Please someone correct me if I'm wrong :))

I'd trade, or buy from, someone I trusted not only to have good intentions (not lying about being in an accident, for instance) but also to be knowledgeable about carseat care and maintenance. Those don't always go together. ;) And I'd guess that since the original owner took the HUGS off the seat, she probably *wasn't* all that carseat-savvy -- she may have washed the harness or done some other no-no.

I agree -- sell the cover and trash the seat.

I have a seat from freecycle that I use. The person was just giving it away and was clueless enough to tell me the truth when I asked her questions. The seat had been used for a short amount of time and never cleaned. I wouldn't trust someone trying to make a profit.

Yeah, and people donate dangerous seats all the time to goodwill and they're not out to make a profit either.

Yes, people do trade on here often, but not with just anybody. :) I'd trade with/buy from Starlight or Arly, for instance, because I've "known" them on here a long time, know their level of car seat knowledge and care, and would trust a seat from them completely.

On the other hand, I wouldn't trade with/buy from you or, say, Carefulove, because I don't know you well enough to trust a seat from you. (No offense intended, I simply don't know you - this was just to illustrate a point. :))

If the OP 100% trusts the seller - AND if the seller told her that the seat was never in an accident AND that the straps were never submerged in water AND that the seller was the original owner of the seat, etc. - I don't really see any reason for OP not to use the seat if she so chooses. :twocents: OP will of course want to check for recalls.

I have picked up several seats from freecycle and all the people were clueless and honest. I destroyed all but the one seat from the person who answered the questions with the right answers. Goodwill does not question the donors of car seats and then certify that they are okay. I bet if they did, a lot of people would answer honestly and a bunch of seats would not make it to the shelves.
