So we are here in Germany. BUT on the flight to Germany (Lifthuansia) they wouldnt let me put Seth RF. Even when I showed her it was safe she said they dont believe it is safe to have carseats rear-facing on a plane! I asked her what someone with an infant was supposed to do and she told me they had to hold thier child on their lap!
Anyone heard of this? My sis is flying out here next week with her 9m old so I want to make sure she has the info to give them.

I didnt argue b/c he was going to be facing foward most the flight anyways, but I am confused.

Many European airlines don't allow the use of a carseat with children under a certain age and instead require that a harness similar to a tether strap be used. It's not really a good situation, and I don't have a full explanation, but it's what a lot of European airlines do. (Lifthsusia is a European airline I'm guessing from the name anyways? If it's a US airline, they have to allow the seat to be installed according to directions...)

Okay. I was wondering. She almost didnt let me use the carseat but I told her it was airline approved.
I will let my sister know. I guess if they let her use it my nephew will just have to be FF. He wont be in the seat the whole time anyways b/c it is a 10.5 hr flight.

What a pain though.

We had to FF Piper on British Midlands, even though her seat was from 22 pounds and she was 17. They gave me a loop of seatbelt to use in an emergency. To take her OUT of the carseat and put her on my lap. WTF?

Anyway, I only fly American carriers internationally now until Piper is done using her seat. Many European carriers also don't allow them for kids over three. And kids under six months aren't allowed a seat.

Air France says that you have to have an adult per baby. So I guess moms of twins can't fly alone.

Pretty backward, huh?

Airlines are governed by rules of their home country and not the departing country. So, if they say no RF car seat, that's the way it has to be. I agree, pretty stupid. We travel internationally a lot, and before buying ticket, I always look up the airlines rules. DS is more comfortable in a car seat and I won't take him out of it. He's 3.5yo, so soon we're getting to the age where some airlines don't allow car seat use on board. I think QANTAS age limit is 5yo. We try to fly US airlines if we can.

Yes, this has happened to me 2 different times now with Lufthansa. I the first time I had to put a 10 mo old FFing and the second time I had to put a 24 month old a 6 mo old FFing for a 15 hour flight... ask me how happy I was... Plus, they wouldn't even let me take their seats on one of the smaller planes on that trip so I had to hold both kids and gate check the seats.

I asked to talk to the pilot both trips and was told that it's because the seats don't fit RFing-- they can only fit a couple of infant seats and a Maxi Cosi seat RFing. The other seats are just too big. I don't know if that is a "legit" answer, but it was the one I was given twice.

I'm about to make another trip over and have just resigned myself to them FFing. Both are much older now so it's not too much of an issue to me, but FFing an 6 month old was not my cup of tea, that's for sure.

OT: Welcome to Germany! Give it some time... it can take awhile to get used to everything. I hope you guys will enjoy it. :) We like it, when we are actually there and DH isn't deployed, lol!

We used to fly Lufthansa all the time, I remember them giving my mom a seatbelt thing for my sister when she was a baby - it looked like the seatbelt they use to demntrate how to buckle up - just a loop. It went around her waist and looped though my moms seatbelt and buckled to itself. They had her wear it for take off and landing.

I loved Lufthansa though, they used to give out great toys to kids!
