coats and car seats

Even though we are still in the throes of summer here, I am starting to purchase colder weather clothing for my older 2 DC, because of back to school shopping...and in the midst of this have seen quite a few cute winter coats for DD (18 months) But...would I be better off with a light coat??? I am concerned because it can get very very cold here during the winter and I want to make sure she stays warm, but that we are also safe inthe car. Last year she was still in the SS1 and it was easy to cover her up. Any suggestions would be great. What does eveyone do in the winter...especially in colder climates?

My kids have coats for out of the car. I made a fleece poncho for my little one so that I would not have to remove a coat for the car seat. He didn't play outside last year, but this year he might. I'll just put a coat on him for outside play or wandering around looking at decorations. Otherwise, going from car to the store and such he is fine in a long sleeved shirt, sweatshirt, and double thickness fleece poncho. The rest of the kids are not so lucky. They have to wear a sweatshirt under the coat and remove it to get into the car.

I always buy Jenna a more light weight winter coat, that isn't too heavy. Once we are in the car, I buckle her in, and then put a thick blanket on top of her to keep her warm until the car heats up. If we are going somewhere where she will need a warmer coat, we will bring one along. She has had 2 coats every year. I already have my son's 2 coats for this winter too.

Ok, so I still have her winter coat from last year...it still fits. And it has a fleece liner that zips out and can be worn seperatley...I was thinking to use a set up similar, if not, just use the same coat (even though I so want to go buy cute new ones). If I put her in the fleece and in the car seat, I can bring along the bulky coat in case it's needed outside of the car. But is there a particular brand of thin coat that will keep a little one warmer? With wind chill it can get very cold around here at times.

I am not sure I can answer this cause we have underground parking but he wears his coat to the car, stops at the door while I take it off then climbs up. Then when he is buckled I stick a blanket on him.

Aidensmom02 (Something like that) posted a post on how to safely wear a winter coat in the car. Not sure it is what you are looking for but it also gives you some information. HERE IT IS

I have 3 kids that all wear a heavy winter coat we are in Ohio. We wear them to the car everyone stands infront of their seat and takes their coat off climbs in gets buckled and then covers up with blankets that are kept in the car. They have never really complained. They wear hats and glvoes and keep those one until the car is warm.

My MIL is the BEST poncho maker in the world. I seriously badger her on a regular basis that she is sitting on a Goldmine. She can pump out 3 a day. She's amazing. So, since my kids have about 10 each, they usually wear those on a daily basis and I leave a winter coat at school for them to wear there when they go outside. They're only out of the house/school/car for less than a minute each time. I have a remote start as well, so getting into a cold car is never an issue.

Last year, I bought the 3 in one coats from Target and they worked really well. I might buy them again this year, but the girls really only wore the thin solid part. We're big blanket users anyway so if the girls are cold, they much prefer to use their blankets. Personally, I can't stand wearing a coat in the car myself. Too restrctive for me. I'd rather jack up the heat.

We use thin coats for day to day - generally fleece that can be worn in the carseat, and I have warmer coats for outside play.
