What do you think is the best infant seat out there (safest)? and why? (i'm thinking about possibly the chicco keyfit)
also, is it necessary to buy an infant seat with a newborn or is it possible to get something bigger that a newborn can grow into?

thanks!!

Re: What is your favorite infant seat?

I  my keyfit!!! It fit my dd great and she would likely still fit now at 18 months. I sold it when she was 12.5 months old and put her in a marathon. I loved how the infant insert snuggled her in close and the harness adjuster was so smooth. The seat was super easy to install everywhere I put it.

As far as I know, there aren't any reliable crash test reports out about infant seats. They are tested by their manufacturers to meet government requirements, so if they are on the shelves then they meet the requirements, but the manufacturers do not release their specific crash test info. Consumer Reports ran an article based on flawed testing that they had to retract because of errors in their testing methods, so that may have been where you read about the Graco Snugride.

That being said, I frequently see the Keyfit, Safeseat, and Snugride recommended here. I have used both a Safeseat and a Snugride, and I loved how easy it was the install the Safeseat. Evenflo infant seats have had a number of recalls, so I've read that some people shy away from that brand of infant seat.

You can put a newborn in a convertible seat, but not all convertible seats fit a newborn that well. It would depend on the type of seat; I'm not familiar with putting a newborn in a convertible seat, but I know others on this board can address that issue. :)

The best/safest seat is the one that fits your car, fits your child and that you will use correctly every time.

You can spend $1000 and not use a seat correctly and it's not going to do its job.

You can spend $40 and use the seat correctly and it'll do it's job(but not all crashes are survible).

ITA about the testing. They're all safe. Front adjust seats are easier to make sure they're tight, so that may give them a nudge toward "safer", but if they're used properly they're certainly quite safe.

There are a few convertibles that fit newborns well from birth. The Cosco Scenera, the Evenflo Triumph Advance, the Learning Curve True Fit, and the Sunshine Kids Radian. There are two versions of the Radian, the 65 and the 80. The 80 has infant padding that would be nice for a newborn. Both have the same top slots, so I wouldn't expect 80 pounds of it. All of those seats go to 35 pounds rear facing and are tall enough for kids to get there. The Scenera goes to 40 pounds forward, the EFTA 50 pounds, the TF 65 pounds, and the Radian 65/80. The Scenera has 15" top slots, the EFTA has 17.5", the TF has 17", and the Radian has 18".

after having used it, and then adding how long it can be used, I have to say the Graco SS1... its just so EASY... and it lasts longer than the keyfit.

and, yes, the Uptown and Avenue fit newborns well (the Uptown has, and the Avenue is identical to it)

The SS1 stands for Safe Seat 1. Graco has an SS1,2, and 3. The 1 is an infant seat, the 2 a forward only seat, and the 3 a booster.
The SS1 infant seat goes till 30 lbs. The Snugride only goes till 22 lbs.

We have only used the Chicco Keyfit 30 and Peg Perego Viggio (which we have now) and I prefer the chicco to be honest. I think b/c its deeper and seems length wise to be more comfy when baby gets older. I do love PPViggio though. The print was super cute.

Anyways I never used any other seat besides a marathon
