It's one that you have to have the handle down on in the car. That alone may make her change her mind, it takes up a LOT of space. I've never had any real problems w/ the install though or using it. I think the straps are kind of short, don't leave much room to pull on, but they're usable till 22#.

good to know. i'll mention it to her, but i doubt that will make her change her mind. :(

how well does it install with a seatbelt? she insist on putting it in the middle so he 2 older childern can sit on either side of the new baby. one of the girls just turned 5 (@40lbs, sits in nothing) and her 9 year old(maybe 45 lbs, also in nothing). the 9 year old is very very small, both girls where the same clothes. she's the same size as my sisters dd that just turned 6.

What kind of car does she have? I bought then returned a flex loc for ds2 because it would not install correctly in my car (ob in '06 Accord). It tilted... Kind of weird. I had the same problem w/ the Companion, just may be my car.

i got the graco travel system. i don't know what other people think about that here. but i liked the carrier. the base felt like it was really sturdy in my car and it was easy to install (well for my brother....easier for me since i didn't do it. hehe!) and i could get it in and out easy. and the stroller is really nice and light. it was about $200. not too expensive for a travel system. so if she doesn't want to spend a whole lot it might be a thought. i'd ask around on here for more advice on that brand though.

mine is the metrolite by the way.

an 07 jeep cherokee. but even if it doesn't install correctly i don't think she'd return it! :( she is dead set on it, and safety is NOT her concern.

She's one of "those" Our hospital does a carseat check before you're allowed to leave the hospital...I wonder if hers does that ;)

I have heard of issues with the Flex Loc and installing with a seatbelt.

no, my sister delivered at the same hospital. when we left the hospital with my DN, the nurse saw me come back to the room with his infant seat, she told me you dont have to bring it in, it's just more of a hassel and you will have more stuff to carry down. i told her i wanted to adjust the straps before we made it to the car to make sure he fit well!

:( this is how i'm going to install it, since she wants it in the middle!

I have a Baby Trend Travel System(2005 model) and really like it alot. I am not too crazy about the infant seat(but it is nice for the price), but the stroller is great. The Flex Locs should be used with the LATCH system only. The other cool thing about the infant seat is that you can interchange the infant seat with other Baby Trend bases. Baby Trend also has a rigid LATCH which looks really cool and that might be a good choice for installing, but the Flex Loc is also nice. What I also like about the base is that it has the allegator connectors(depending on the base that you get. All in all, I think that I will probably use this for my second child, unless I get rich LOL.

Please do not get the Flex Loc if you do not have the LATCH system. The BT infant seat is not as safe using the safety belt(it has belt paths on the top of this seat). They do have different times of bases for this seat that can use the seat belt.

To clarify, the Baby Trend infant seat base may be installed with the vehicle seatbelt or with LATCH, and you do not use those notches on the sides of the infant seat to install the base with the vehicle seatbelt. The base has a specific belt path for threading the vehicle seatbelt to install it. Those notches on the sides of the infant seat are for installing it baseless using the vehicle seatbelt threaded through those notches. A seatbelt installation technically is no less safe than a LATCH installation provided that you can achieve a proper installation with less than 1 inch of movement at the belt path. The trick may be actually achieving that proper installation with the seatbelt with seats like the Baby Trend models that are more LATCH -installation friendly. :)

I do not feel that good about the car seat being in the car w/o the base and being installed with the seat belt. I have read many different opinions about parents having problems getting a good install without the base.

It's perfectly safe to install any infant seat without the base that is designed to be installed that way. All it takes is some practice. If you're uncomfortable with the technique, there's a video here to watch and learn from: www.CarSeatSite.com/videos.htm . In fact, there are 2 camps on base vs. no base when it comes to infant seats. Some techs feel that it's important to use a base because you install it correctly once and leave it that way. Others feel that using just the infant seat without the base gets a tighter coupling with the vehicle and removes the minute chance that the seat could fly off the base in a crash.

Also, I'd like to reiterate what Jean said that the base can be installed with a seat belt. It is not required that your vehicle have lower LATCH anchors in order to install the base.
