What seat is this?

Is it OK to use?? Expired, recalled?

How about the booster next to it? I didn't get a good shot of it.

The harness is being used for a 30 pound 3.5 year old.
The booster is for a boy in first grade. Average height and weight.

Fisher Price Safe Embrace convertible, last made in 2001, good for eight years. It's possible it's got a little bit of life left, but it's more probable that it's expired.

The booster looks like a Cosco Protek. Requires vehicle head support at least up to the tops of the ears.

I think the seatbelt is supposed to be ontop of those metal bars, something looks very wrong with that installation

I didn't even look at installation, oops. I just looked at what seats they are. :p It doesn't even look installed at all, just sitting on the seat.

The booster is a Protek. Mine was made in '06.

I saw you did the first set of observations, so my brain was freed up for the second set, lol.

I know the seats get moved around a lot, so maybe she just didn't install it from the last move. I pray.

Money is real tight with them. What seats would you suggest? I am thinking the scenera or uptown for the under 30 pound 3.5 year old.

Then maybe a new booster for big brother when little brother outgrows the harness? Suggestions maybe?

The Scenera would be iffy for the 3.5yo, the top slots are only 15 inches high. The Uptown/Avenue has top slots about 16 inches tall, so that would be better, but something like an Evenflo Chase or Graco CarGo would last even longer, they have 17 inch top slots. The Chase isn't much more than a Scenera, and the CarGo isn't much more than an Avenue.

Does that vehicle have head support? It's hard to tell from the pics. If not, big brother needs a booster sooner rather than later, if the tops of his ears are over the vehicle seat back when he's sitting in the booster. The TurboBooster is probably what I'd look at.

I will talk to them. Mom (grandma) will probably be very receptive. She did buy a Kia Sedona because of the safety ratings.
My main concern is that they will stick the little one in the booster and leave the first grader in a belt only.
I bump into them once a week or so. I will post back with any changes. Thanks for your help!

Oh, does Big Lots sell both the CarGo and Chase?

I also just remembered that I still have DS's Eddie Bauer Deluxe convertible. How high are the highest useable top slots on that? Should I just give it to them? It doesn't expire until 2011 and I will never use it.

It's worth trying - the slots should be about the same height.

If it's even a LITTLE space, it gives them a safe, non-expired seat to use until they can get a new one.

The FPSE is a wonderful seat. That one however is an older one - plush cover and tan harness gives it away.

Just to let you know, I saw the Chase at target for $29.xx last week on clearance, so theoretically, even less than a full price Scenera.

Just be sure to check the DOM on clearance seats.

An old seat might cancel the savings.

FWIW, I wouldn't worry much about the expiration on a backless booster (unless it had a "shield" or was terribly beat up). It's purpose is a precrash positioner (like a locking clip or harness clip).

I'd recommend checking out the Target clearance as well, an Evenflo Chase should work well. If the 3.5 yr old has a short torso, the Cosco combo seats could also work.
