RF help: Alpha Omega Elite

I need some help getting an Alpha omega elite to RF (center seat) in a 1999 Camry. My son is 18 months ~26# and ~33" tall. I don't like this seat but he is not in this car often and when he is, it is just for a short ride home from his sitter. He rides in RF in a Blvd normally (which I love).

My husband uses this car for commuting and this car seat was previously installed RF in an Expedition (so space was not an issue).

Please let me know if RF is possible (hubby has to be able to drive the car and he is 6') and any tricks. Thank you, I really appreciate it as right now I had to turn it FF to get it to fit.

Did you take the base off? That will give you some more room. You can also install it more upright since he is older, so that should help as well.

I never even thought about taking the base off. Hubby had the manual (not with me) and didn't realized you could do that. Thanks, that should do the trick. I really want a new car seat but we'll work on that.

Definitely remove the base. You may not be able to get it in the middle since your husband is so tall. May need to go passenger outboard so the seat doesn't interfere with his driver's seat. If you need to install outboard and you find the seat tips due to tension from the shoulder belt once you lock the belt, you may need to reinstall with the belt in ELR mode (unlocked) using a locking clip. But it may install fine using the shoulder belt in the locked mode, so try that first.

Without the clunky base, the AO is actually pretty modest in terms of front-to-back space requirements. We drive a '96 Corolla, and an AO was the first carseat we ever bought. We initially tried installing with the base, and it was a total no-go; without the base it was quite reasonable (we had it installed behind the driver's seat). In later years I've installed RF Britax seats (Wizard, Marathon), a Scenera, and a RF Radian in the same vehicle -- the AO takes up less space front-to-back than any of those others. As a previous poster said, if your DH has long legs, you may do better with a passenger side install.

So, I agree with everyone else -- get rid of the base :). We have two AO's, and I tend to forget they even came with bases... I think they're sitting at the bottom of a closet somewhere...
