Baby D

DS1 is 10 days old. He was 19 inches and 6 lbs 9 oz last week at the doctor's office. He is adopted and was a surprise phone call.

We have a Marathon, a Diplomat, a Roundabout, and an Evenflo Embrace. We brought him home from the hospital in the Evenflo infant bucket and I hate it. It has the rear adjust and the harness straps are a huge pain to move up and down. The handle has the recall that we fixed with the kit they mailed out. I want to get him the Keyfit. DH wants to wait until he fits better in the Britax convertibles and not purchase a new seat.

So, I guess my question is how long do you think it will be until he fits in the convertible seats well? He's over 5 lbs so he could technically go in them but the fit is awful right now. Is it enough time to be worth getting him a Keyfit? We aren't having a baby shower until September. I'm not a lug an infant carrier around kind of person. I've been wearing him when we are out in public.

We have a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo and a 2000 F350 with 4 real doors.

If you're not really a lug the baby bucket around type gal I'd look for an infant seat that's cheaper than the keyfit. The keyfit is really nice, but I think you'd be just as happy with a front adjust snugride. The Baby Trend Flex-Loc seat is a also a great seat that won't break the bank.

If you have a Target or Toys/Babies R Us close by you may want to check out if they have any Britax Companions on clearance. Toys R Us shows them as being on sale on line, but out of stock.

Yes to everything she said. I'm not an infant bucket person either, and to me it's not worth it to spend $200+ on an infant seat that I would only use for 2 months or so until the baby fits into a convertible.

Congrats! Does he not fit in the Roundabout? I thought that was more of an infant seat, a miniature Marathon. I'm sorry, when it comes to infant seats I'm not that experienced. I can't even remember which one I used

The bottom harness slots are the same on the Marathon and Roundabout.

Nope, it's a Marathon with a shorter shell.

May I suggest a different route, since the others have discussed the infant seats? What if you got a convertible with a lower bottom harness height? Granted, you have three convertibles already, but two (the Diplomat and Roundabout) won't last long forward or rear facing. You'll need harnessed seats after them. They're great for travel, but you may end up buying a convertible in a couple of years to rear face longer. And since you don't use the carrier, why not just get a convertible fit for a newborn?

The Evenflo Triumph Advance is $130 at Target, Walmart, BRU. It has low bottom slots (not sure of the measurement, but small enough for a newborn). It rear faces to 35 pounds and forward faces to 50 with 17.5" top harness height. Through the torso this seat will last longer than your Marathon. And at least right now your DS doesn't need any higher weights, though that may change as time goes on. This way you would spend less money and get a seat that lasts longer.

You could also go for the Cosco Scenera. It has a 35 pound rear facing limit and a 40 pound forward facing limit with 15" top slots. I think the bottom slots are 7.5" or 8". It's $45, which makes it a great buy. It fits newborns really well, though you may need noodles to get the right angle. It's nine pounds, so for a travel seat it's even easier than the Roundabout or Diplomat. It will be outgrown rear facing just after the Roundabout is, but it's what, 20% of the price? So it's a good bargain. You can find that at Walmart, Target, Kmart.

How old are your Britax convertible seats? If they're going to expire before babe is out of them anyways, I'd go get a True Fit or EFTA and just use it instead. Both of them fit small babies very well and will get most kids to booster age.

The TF has a removable headrest which makes it easy to get the 45* newborn recline without being a complete space hog, and the EFTA is really quite compact front to back even when at a 45* angle.

(I see that Wendy suggested something similar while I was in the midst of typing this, but I figured I'd add my twocents anyways. ;))

Oh, and the bottom harness height on the EFTA is 7". :)

:yeahthat:

If you already have some nice convertibles that are well within their lifespan then I would just get a Scenera to use untill he gets big enough for the bigger Britax seats. The Scenera is an inexpensive option & it fits newborns well! However IF you're not going to lug the carrier then I truely do not think the Keyfit is worth the money!
Good Luck & Congrats!
