Read the manual before using a child seat!

A friend bought a Nautilus for her son. Her husband installed it but did not adjust the harness for their 4 year old son - so it's on the lowest setting. They've never used the seat before and today sent their babysitter to pick up their son. She just called me, she babysits for us too, and asked if I can talk her through changing the harness over, as she can not put the 4yo in the seat. I tried to talk her through it, but the babysitter gave up, saying this is just ridiculous of the parents and she called the mum and told her to come in the other car as she can not adjust the harness without the manual. I just downloaded the manual and there's lovely visual pictures.

I mean, come on people, adjust the seat to fit your child!

OMG, that's just ridiculous!! They aren't new parents- you'd think with a 4 yo you'd know by now that you need to adjust the seat. I guess they didn't care and wanted to make it the sitter's problem. But sheesh, at least bring her the manual!

I cannot imagine trying to fit the averaged sized 4 year old in the lowest setting. Wonder why they didn't change it. Or provide the manual! The back of the seat is a bit confusing if you have never seen it before.

I agree, you should read the manual. But.... honestly, I only flipped through the manual on our new Blvd. I wanted to read it, but with it attached to the seat it is very difficult. I wear glasses and need to be able to hold it reasonably close to my face.

A friend of ours was at our house when I was trying to read it and mentioned how inconvenient it was and she said that it was a law that it was a law that the manual had to remain attached to the seat?
(I don't know if that is true or not)

But when I get something new I like to sit down on the couch and read the manual. I can't exactly hold up a heavy car seat to a comfortable viewing level- so what's the deal?

After skimming the manual and finding it very irritating, I watched some video's on youtube and then did my install.

The Britax manual is attached for a purpose: most parents misplace the manual and can't find it when they need it. ;) The Britax manual also comes off pretty easily by unlooping the elastic cord.

The Nautilus manual fits into a nice spot on the back of the seat. It's extremely helpful when carseats come with an attached manual, or a nice spot to put it, because 99% of the seats that come into checks around here DO NOT HAVE THE MANUAL. Our checks aren't very well organized, either, I guess, because we don't keep every carseat manual on file, so without a manual on hand, we don't know about many of the rules pertaining to that specific carseat.

www.gracobaby.com has the manuals online (www.britaxusa.com does, too... you can at least blow 'em up real big for easy reading...)

:)

PS, nah, it's not a law they have to be attached...but the olden days were better, Britax used to give you two! one for the car, and one for the house...I guess it costs too much do do that anymore or something?

The Dad installed it and he thinks he knows everything about car seats and that good enough means the seats are in properly. Eg. 2 car seats using the same Latch anchor, using center latch in a car that doesn't have it, not moving the harness up when child gets taller, using a cargo hook for a top tether. The mum thinks installing car seats is too difficult, I keep telling her it's easy once you do it a few times. I'll try again to teach her, she says she's not strong enough, I tell her it's all about tricks not strength. Maybe now that she had to go from work to pick up her son, she'll decide to learn how to do it herself, so she doesn't have to rely on her husband.

The Britax manual also comes off pretty easily by unlooping the elastic cord.

I was afraid to take out the foam. Can I do that? Take out the foam block so I can unloop the cord and read the manual?

I competely understand why it is handy to have them with the seat, it is just very difficult to read while it is attached to the seat. I would rather put it in the pocket behind the seat.
