Outboard with tether or center without?

Which would you put your child in? I just switched cars with my boyfriend for our summer in CA. He took the 1990 Toyota Corolla and I took his 2002 Honda Accord rental. The Accord only has top tether anchors in the outboard positions. Normally my son rides in the center position tethered in our main cars back in VA. So which is safest right now for him? Outboard in the Accord tethered? Or in the center untethered? Another option would be to just keep the Corolla and keep him in the center tethered there (I had an anchor installed), but I'm thinking the the Accord is the overall safer vehicle since it's 12 years newer than the Corolla. Am I correct? Right now he's in the Accord outboard and tethered.

He's almost 5 years old, 43lbs, 43 1/2" tall and is riding in a Britax Frontier (which installed beautifully and rock-solid in the Accord using the SBP ).

Can anyone look up an '02 Accord in the LATCH manual? It seems weird to me that there would only be 2 tethers in a car of that vintage. Is it possible the centre tether is there but not obvious?

It does seem odd that the Accord doesn't have a top tether anchor for the center rear seating position. The LATCH manual indicates the '02 Accord has 3 top tether anchors in the rear filler panel for both the 2-door and 4-door versions.

Hmmm, that's weird. Both of the two top anchors are clearly visible-- they are out in the open and not covered at all. Maybe it's an '01 Accord then? Does that one only have two top anchors? I'll check again tomorrow. It's a 4-door.

Accord models have had 3 factory equipped top tether anchors since the 2000 model year based on the LATCH manual's info. The LATCH manual isn't 100% infallible, though. I wonder if someone removed the center tether anchor in your '02 model, or if there's a cover on it?
