Which child in the middle?

There's so much conflicting information. I always thought it was the youngest child, but now I'm seeing recommendations of the most vulnerable, which could mean a forward-facing child over a rear-facing child.

I have an almost 2yo rear-facing in a Boulevard, and I'll have a 4.5yo ff in a Regent. I'm driving an '05 Odyssey with side airbags if that matters, and I'll be putting them both in the middle row (two captains chairs slid together, without the "magic seat" in between). It would be *easier* with the Regent in the middle, but I don't want to choose ease over safety.

What would you do?

Honestly, the difference is pretty slight. And anything that is easier means you're less likely to make mistakes.

Once I've got basic safety covered (RF/harnessing the ones that can be), I seat my kids where it's most convenient.
