toyota yaris 2008

we were considering buying a toyota yaris to replace my 1998 saturn sl2 - the crash test ratings were not very good w/o ABS and side curtain airbags so I would definately get those - the kids will not be in this car very often - I copied a page from the manual this morning (a guy at work has this car) The warning concerns me a little and I was wondering what others thought of it. It says:
"Vehicles with side airbags and curtain sheild airbags: Do not allow the child to lean his/her head or any part of his/her body against the door or the area of the seat, front and rear pillars or roof side rail from which the side airbags or curtain sheild airbags deploy even if the child is seated in the child restraint system. It is dangerous if the side airbags and curtain sheild airbags inflate, and the impact could cause death or serious injury to the child."

I think that warning is more to the effect of keep your child properly positioned in an appropriate child restraint or the vehicle seatbelt rather than implying not to use the outboard seating positions for a properly restrained child. :twocents: Kids that are out of position with their heads resting up against the door frame or window would be at risk and not necessarily from the curtain airbag in that scenario, but from being improperly restrained such that they could rest their head on the door frame or window in the first place. :twocents: NHTSA also has a FAQ about side torso/side curtain airbags and children at http://www.safercar.gov/portal/site...toid=a93be66aeee35110VgnVCM1000002fd17898RCRD and the FAQ includes links you can use to check on whether or not a specific vehicle model equipped with side/side curtain airbags allows use of a child restraint in the outboard seating positions. It's generally older model cars equipped with side airbags that have a restriction about child restraint usage next to them rather than newer models.
