I cannot keep my two year old buckled in his car seat. He takes off the buckle in shopping carts and strollers too. I want to find a car seat that buckles in an X and buckles into the sides of the car seat so he couldn't reach it. Has anyone know of any solutions? I need something quick before I'm a victim in an accident.

This is just the rough side of sticky velcro that you stick on the release button so it'll irritate little fingers too much to press it.

Unless the child craves sensory input -- there's a medical term that I'm forgetting -- then it just makes it even more enticing....

Aw man. No solutions but your post makes me nervous. My girls have never once tried to get out of their carseat, but I could totally see my son doing it if he figured out that he could. He is obsessed with buckles, but so far he can only buckle, not unbuckle anything. Yikes!

Rachel just learned to unclip her chest clip and so far only does it when I tell her too or she jumps the gun and does it while I'm getting out of the car. She can't do the buckle yet.

(but do answer papoose's questions and read that link, there are lots of ways to fix this problem!!!!)

Thanks for the website. I've spanked his leg, pulled over to buckle it up, yelled at him aghhh! He even opens all the child safety gadgets: door knob covers, cupboard locks, you name it. Maybe his name s/b Houdini

Do you know which Graco? There are a bunch  Is he unbuckling the top chest clip or the bottom crotch buckle or both?

Is the harnesses snug enough that you cannot pinch a horizontal crease at the collar bone?

Have you tried engaging him during the ride so he's more interested in something else? Music, cloth books, soft puppets, I spy games? Have you tried rewarding him everytime he rides correctly?

My DS is the same as your son, he can open anything. And at about the same age he undid his car seat. I've never been so angry or scared before or since. And it scared him. He never tried it again, well, so far he hasn't. Since then I've talked to him about why has to be in a car seat and now at 3.5 yo, he'll help me do up the buckles and will position the chest clip properly etc.

On a side note, the only child proof locks he can't open are Tot locks. They require a special magnet to open the lock and we keep the magnet on the fridge. It worked until DS pushed the dining room chair over to the fridge, climbed up, took the magnet off the fridge, opened a cabinet, took what he wanted, then returned the magnet to the fridge and the chair to the dining room. To solve this, we now put the magnet in progressively higher positions. Without the magnet, it is impossible to open the cabinet, as a baby sitter discovered one evening - she forgot where the magnet was.
