June Parents magazine has a little thing about rear-facing.....

It is the issue with a child on his dad's shoulders.

page 38 "New Car-seat rule"

"It's five times safer for your 1 year old to ride facing backwards then forward, a new study has found. The American Academy of Pediatrics' recommendation has been to keep a child in a rear-facing seat until she's at least 1 year and 20 lbs. But in light of this new research experts now recommend that you keep your toddler's convertible car seat facing backwards until she reaches the seat's height and weight limits for the rear position (usually 36 inches and 30-35 lbs)."

The AAP recommendation to rear face to the max. of the convertible seat's RF capacity actually dates back to 2002, and I really wish the media would emphasize it's a long standing recommendation, reinforced by more recent study results. Parents at least is getting more on board and promoting ERFing now. :)

And I wish they'd not said "until she reaches the seat's height and weight limits " (bolding mine) as it implies that a 40 pound child is still safe rearfacing provided s/he hasn't yet reached the height limit. But, I should worry - the old recommendation of 1 year *and* 20 pounds had a lot of people hearing 1 year *or* 20 pounds - maybe they'll do the same here?
